Why Bench Test
Why Bench Test Preparation Matters
The bench test is pass or fail. So is your application.
**The challenge for international dentists:**
Years since dental school
You haven’t touched a typodont in years
Different standards
Your country’s techniques may differ from U.S. standards
Timed conditions
Performing under pressure is different than practice
Being observed
Faculty evaluation adds stress
High stakes
Failed bench test = rejected application
**Your clinical experience on real patients doesn’t prepare you for this.**
The bench test requires:
- Performing on typodonts (different feel than real teeth)
- Meeting specific U.S. preparation criteria
- Working under timed conditions
- Being evaluated by faculty
Without proper preparation, experienced dentists fail. With preparation, you pass confidently.
Preparation depth
Specific minimums differ
Margin design
Different requirements
Taper angles
More or less precise
Retention features
Different emphasis
Terminology
Same concepts, different terms
You may have been doing excellent work for years by your country's standards.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. We provide all instruments, typodonts, burs, materials — everything. Unlike other programs that require you to purchase equipment, you bring nothing.
Dr. Golda Erdfarb — a current Associate Professor and Clinical Course Director at a U.S. dental school. Not a retired dentist or non-faculty instructor.
That’s exactly why this program exists. We teach you from the fundamentals, with proper U.S. standards, and build your skills systematically.
Clinical Preceptorship is comprehensive: U.S. clinical experience, faculty LOR opportunity, and full CAAPID application support. Bench Test Prep focuses specifically on technical skills for bench test evaluations. Preceptorship includes some hands-on training; Bench Test Prep is 100% hands-on skill building.
It depends on your target schools and skill level. If your schools require bench tests, dedicated bench test prep is valuable. If you’re doing preceptorship and your schools don’t require bench tests, preceptorship may be sufficient.
Ideally 4-8 weeks before your scheduled bench test or [interview] (for schools that do bench tests during interview).
Continuing Education credits. You receive 35 ADA CERP credits, which may count toward licensure requirements in some states.
